A splayfoot (pes transversoplanus) is a deformity of the foot in which the transverse arch of the foot flattens and the load on the metatarsal bone increases. This causes the forefoot to widen, which often leads to pain, especially in the bunion area. This deformity can be caused by genetic predisposition, wearing unsuitable shoes or overloading the foot. Splayfoot often occurs in women, especially when wearing high heels.
