Rhizarthrosis
Understanding rhizarthrosis: Causes, symptoms and effective occupational therapy treatments
The information on this page has been checked by the physiotherapist Andreas Mondl.
Rhizarthrosis is osteoarthritis of the thumb saddle joint that often occurs in middle-aged to older people. It is caused by the progressive wear and tear of the joint cartilage in the thumb. Risk factors include overuse, genetic predisposition and age.
Typical symptoms include pain at the base of the thumb, limited mobility and loss of strength in the thumb. These symptoms can make everyday activities such as gripping, holding or writing difficult and severely impair quality of life.
Mediphysio is your occupational therapy practice in Döbling
Occupational therapy can help to improve the functionality of the hand and relieve pain. At Mediphysio, we offer targeted hand therapies and pain-relieving techniques. These measures help to stabilize the thumb joint, promote mobility and reduce pain. The focus is on individual therapy plans that are tailored to the needs of each patient.
Those affected can perform light stretching and mobilization exercises for the thumb to maintain mobility. It is important to consult a doctor or occupational therapist if you have any questions to ensure that the exercises are carried out correctly.
